The long, enduring history of Jewish community life in Poland extends over a millennium and continues today. From a sociocultural perspective this course will present the historical context, leading up to the mid-20th century, and then explore Polish Jewish experiences of the Holocaust during WWII (1939-1945), the Soviet communist times (1945-1989), and finally, the current, postcommunist period (1989-present). Jewish history, religion, and culture on Polish lands will be covered, with emphasis on Jewish-nonJewish relations, antisemitism and philosemitism, as well as the postcommunist revival of Jewish life in contemporary Poland.
