Contemporary Poland and Her Society in the 21st Century (ang.)

Since 1989 Poland has been officially a free market democracy with a civic society. Yet while economic and political changes are relatively easy to engineer, the social ones are much harder and take much longer. This course will present contemporary Polish society, noting remnants from the past, examining evidence of deeper transformations already accomplished, and predicting negative and positive trends developing into the future.

History of Poland: from Kingdom to Third Republic (ang.)

A survey of Polish history from the Piast dynasty through the period of Jagiellonian rule, the time of the elected kings, 123 years of partitioned Poland, the 1920s and 1930s, World War II, the creation and functioning of the People's Republic, the collapse of the communist system.

Literatura i kultura polska XX i XXI wieku (pol.)

Najważniejsze zjawiska w polskiej literaturze i kulturze od odrodzenia Polski w roku 1918 do czasów współczesnych. Literatura dwudziestolecia międzywojennego: główne nurty poetyckie, dzieła Witkacego, Schulza, Gombrowicza. Literatura II wojny światowej. Holocaust w literaturze i sztuce. Pisarz w komunizmie. Literatura polska na emigracji. Twórczość Czesława Miłosza i Wisławy Szymborskiej (literackie Nagrody Nobla w latach 1980 i 1996).  Najważniejsze postaci polskiego filmu i teatru. Literatura po 1989 roku: „inwazja kobiet” w literaturze polskiej, twórczość Olgi Tokarczuk (literacka Nagroda Nobla 2018), literatura postpamięci, poezja współczesna.  Omawiane dzieła prezentowane będą wraz z właściwym im kontekstem historycznym.​

Polish Art: Past and Present (ang.) – for four- and six-week program participants only!

The development of Polish art since the 10th c. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of Poland within Europe, including the formative effects of geopolitics on the development of Polish artistic movements, Polish church art, folk art, poster and architecture. In-depth art history lectures will be conducted both at the University and in museums. The course will be accompanied by a program of field trips.

NOTE: There will be an additional fee of 300 PLN for this course to cover various admission fees and other expenses. Classes will start at 1:30 p.m. so only the students who choose four- or six-week program can take this course. Limited admission, on a first come, first served basis.

Polish Culture: Lessons in Polish Literature (ang.)

An overview of the most interesting texts, figures and processes of Polish literary history, presented in a wide cultural context. Literature will be examined as a tool of forming, preserving and - eventually - questioning national identity (i.a. long-life of the Polish Romanticism). This course will also make students familiar with Polish writers responses to the experience of exile, European avant-guards, the Holocaust or the oppression of totalitarian regimes. Special emphasis will be placed on some of the literary masterpieces written in Polish, including literary works of the Nobel Prize winners – Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996), and Olga Tokarczuk (2018).

Polska  współczesna (pol.)

Kurs poświęcony będzie obrazowi Polski XX i XXI wieku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przemian społecznych, politycznych, kulturalnych i obyczajowych w okresie transformacji ustrojowej po roku 1989. W programie znajdą się także zagadnienia związane z kulturą popularną i życiem codziennym Polaków, w tym polskiej młodzieży. Odwołania do historii służyć będą lepszemu zrozumieniu procesów zachodzących w Polsce współcześnie. Każde zajęcia będą bogato ilustrowane materiałami video i audio.

The Jews in Poland (ang.)

This course will make students familiar with the long and glorious history of Jewish communities in Poland as well as with the period from 1939 to 1945 (the Holocaust). Post-Holocaust history of the Jews and Jewish culture in Poland will also be covered, with emphasis on Jewish-non-Jewish relations and anti-Semitism, and recent revival of the Jewish life in Poland.
